 Dear Brisky Diets..... Just wanted to take a moment of your time to tell you how much we appreciate the quality of your hedgehog food and your service. My daughter Adrienne purchased her pet "Squirt" from a local pet store and was told to keep feeding it cat food and some occasional meal worms. We were told the brand of the cat food didn't matter. We also noticed that she really didn't have much energy and was sort of yellowish on her belly, particularly near her paws. We did a search on the Web for some information and came across a great site devoted to hedgehogs (hedgehog-faq), it was there that we first heard about your product. It was also on that site that we first learned that the yellow was probably a symptom of liver problems and that unless we did something fast, my daughter was not going to keep her pet very long. We placed our first order for a small quantity of your food and Squirt immediately showed improvement in her appetite. Within about a month the yellowing was also disappearing and is now gone. There's no doubt in my mind that your food not only made Squirt a more lovable pet, but has also saved her life.  Dear BPP.... I've been feeding Brisky's Hedgehog food since June of 1996. I feed this dry food to provide the hedgehogs with a well balanced diet. This feeding's given to them once a day in the evening. After starting to feed Brisky's Hedgehog Food, my hogs have become much more active and friendlier.  Dear Brisky Pet Products..... I wanted to let you know how pleased I am with your sugar glider food. After a problem with hind leg paralysis, I began feeding my glider, Bode, your product. In a few weeks, he began to feel like his old self again. I am greatly indebted to you, as hind leg paralysis can be fatal. If it hadn't been for you, I would not have begun giving Bode the proper diet he needed to reverse this problem. Bode loves your food (and believe me, he is VERY picky.) Dear Mr. Brisky..... Thank you very much for the sample of your hedgehog food. It took Buba about a week to eat it, but after that he seemed to like it (yeah!). His bad smell immediately stopped. I also purchased some pine shavings. Buba's grouchy/pricky condition has even improved a small amount and his activity has slightly increased. Thank you very much.... Joanne & Buba, RI

 At the end of March, I encountered a mystery that led to the death of several of my hedgehogs. When I picked up the last six females, which I had purchased from another breeder, two of them had bright lime-green spots on their pine bedding. The breeder had casually mentioned to me that if I saw bright green bedding, they had a digestive problem and I should give them chicken broth or pedatric water to treat the upset. I noticed that they also seemed lethargic as if they weren't feeling well. Besides the cat food, I had all my hedgehogs on at the time, I tried chicken broth, mealworms, cottage cheese, canned cat food.... All to no avail. They died two to three weeks later. I switched them all to only Brisky's Hedgehog Food. One to two weeks after my two females died, I discovered another one of my females and one of my males had green bedding. I decided to have my vet euthanize the female to see if we could figure out what was going on. The necropsy he did only showed that the female's liver was a fatty mass. The day after the necropsy was done, three more of my hedgehogs showed similar symptoms. My vet suggested I have the veterinary hospital at Kansas State University euthanize, do a necropsy, and cultures on the affected individuals. The results from KSU were no bacteria, no virus, i.e. they did not have anything contagious, but they all had a fatty tissue mass with a few liver cells in the area where the liver should be. The lime-green on the bedding I saw was urine, not diarrhea. The green urine was a result of the liver being damaged (hepatic lepidosis). The fatty tissue was the result of bad diet i.e. the cat food fed to the hedgehogs. I do know the first two females that died had the green urine before their food changed, and most likely died solely as a result of their fatty livers caused by their cat food diet. The good news is that the liver can regenerate itself with a good diet, therefore, I will continue feeding my stock Brisky's Hedgehog Food as I know the cat food will definitely shorten their life as evidenced by the necropsies done on my hedgehogs that were 2 and 3 years old. All of my females, except one, are now eating only Brisky Hedgehog Food and their babies have been started on a life of good nutrition. Sincerely..... Jan, KS

 Dear Kelle..... Please tell Dick that the Patagonian Cavy I got from him and Bud is the best animal I have at the Zoo. We taught it to sit up and beg, and walk on its' hind feet across the floor.  how pleased I'm with the results that I'm getting from my sugar gliders now that I have your pelleted feed to offer them. I only have one complaint concerning the feed.... I purchased a large strainer so that I could filter out the dust before putting it into the canister in which I store it. There's quite a large amount that is dust; I'm afraid that if it makes it into the food dishes they may inhale this and get a respiratory infection. Is there any way in which this feed could be manufactured without so much dust? Perhaps it could be sifted before shipping? You are still doing a fantastic job.... I am grateful that the accu-feed for sugar gliders is available. Keep up the Good Work! ..... Cynthia,NC

REPLY: Hi Cynthia.... The dust you refer to is what the feed industry calls "fines," in other words fine particles of feed that come from the pellets. They're not harmful. Some breeders actually save the fines and make a mush to feed baby critters. Sometimes excessive handling in shipping causes more crumbling than we like to see. We're considering a binder to put into the pellets while being manufactured. This'd lower the amount of fines, but make the pellet harder. Our concern is we don't want the pellets too hard for weanlings to chew. We're glad that you are using our Sugar GliderDiets and thank you for your kind comments. We are addressing the problem and hope a solution can be found. Most binders used in the food industry are made from inert ingredients, which we prefer not to use. We're researching and testing one that has food value.... If it proves out, we'll start using it in all of our pelleted feed products. Regards..... Dick NOTE: A binder is now  being used.
